Bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa) is a deciduous tree species native to North America. It grows to an average height of 60-100 feet with a spread of 50-80 feet and has a moderate to slow growth rate.

The tree has distinctive large, leathery leaves with lobes and a rough, gray bark that forms distinctive ridges and furrows as it ages.

Bur oak prefers well-drained, fertile soil and full sun exposure. It can grow in a wide range of soil types, including sand, clay, and loam, but prefers a neutral pH (6.0-7.0).

Bur oak is drought-tolerant and can adapt to various climates, making it a good choice for large landscapes, parks, or as a shade tree. It is also used for wood production and wildlife habitat.

Bur oak is not toxic to animals.

When planting near a home or septic system, it's important to consider the tree's mature size and root system. Bur oak has a deep and extensive root system, which can cause damage to structures and septic systems if planted too close. It's recommended to plant the tree at least 20 feet away from the home or septic system to avoid any potential issues.
